Program Overview

The Program

Now in its 52nd year as an educational outreach program, UConn Early College Experience (ECE) is an opportunity for students to take college courses in high school. Every UConn ECE course is equivalent to the same course at the University of Connecticut. There are approximately forty courses in over twenty disciplines made available to partner high schools. UConn ECE courses are taught on the high school campus by UConn certified high school instructors. UConn ECE students benefit by taking college courses in a familiar setting with an instructor they know. They also earn college credit for a fraction of the cost ($25 per credit) it would be had the same course be taken on a college campus.

In 1955, President Jorgensen initiated the High School Cooperative Program for academically motivated high school students. Now, over 50 years later, UConn Early College Experience (ECE) is currently offered in approximately 128 schools in Connecticut to over 5,000 students.

UConn credits are accepted at many colleges and universities across the country (View Transfer Credit Information). UConn ECE is an accredited member of The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP).

Operation of the Program

To assure accreditation compliance requirements, continuous collegial interaction between high school instructors and University faculty is promoted and supported. University departments furnish various forms of support such as course outlines or syllabi, assignments, examinations, lists of experiments, etc., as appropriate to each discipline. Additionally, UConn ECE instructors are required to attend professional development opportunties sponsored by UConn ECE in order to maintain certification. Workshops provide instructors with the chance to meet with University faculty to exchange ideas and instructional techniques. Many University resources and benefits are available to UConn ECE instructors and students.
